M04-01 · Enumeration concepts

Scanning finds service endpoints; enumeration obtains specific information. Interpret visibility and allowed operations separately.

What does enumeration do?

Enumeration uses service queries to list specific information such as accounts, groups and shares.

Imagine entering an office building: you identify companies, check open reception desks and ask for a department list. Entering an office, reading documents and editing them each require separate permissions.

Security staff enumerate resources and check whether a service reveals too much to a particular identity. Visibility depends on network reachability, service configuration, query method and identity.

Connect five ideas

Reconnaissance gathers context, such as domain names and system purposes, using active or passive methods. Scanning checks responses from hosts or service endpoints. An open TCP 445 means a program accepted connections in that observation; identify the actual service separately. Enumeration queries specifics such as shares, accounts or groups. Authentication establishes who you are, for example by signing in with a test account. Authorization determines what that identity may do, such as listing names, reading files or writing files.

This order helps explain the questions; tools may combine several functions. Before testing, obtain permission and agree on targets, accounts, times and operations. A system accepting an operation is separate from permission to test it.

A synthetic example

In an authorized practice environment: ① TCP 445 is open on a file server. ② A protocol response confirms SMB file sharing. ③ A test account queries and receives the share names Public and Finance. ④ Within the agreed scope, reading a test file succeeds on Public and is denied on Finance.

Step ③ is enumeration. Microsoft NetShareEnum queries shared resources; information levels and permission requirements vary. Official documentation

Report these separately: “obtained the Finance name” and “this test account was denied access to the specified file.” Record reading and writing separately. Verify writing only within authorized scope.

Defense and evidence

Use three layers: restrict network reachability, expose only necessary query information, and set read/write permissions according to work needs. Monitor logs for unusual queries.

Hiding names reduces exposure; resource protection still relies on access controls.

Record time, target, identity, operation and the original response. A result describes what this identity achieved under these conditions. A different account or network location may see a different result.

One small check

You listed the Finance name, but opening a file inside it was denied. How would you tell a colleague what has been confirmed and which permissions still need separate verification?

Explain in two or three sentences in your own words. Your answer and follow-up can then be organized together.
